Welcome aboard Commander! o7
1. Very important to remember : "Don't fly without a rebuy"
2. But first: Play the tutorials in game - flying, docking, fighting etc.

Good answer ArtZiom .
you should pick a good home station, i would currently recommend ohm city in lhs 20 and/or wrangell dock in the neighboring system ross 584. the former is near some resource extraction sites (decent money), the latter offers good missions and outfitting. i would recommend you to first do some missions until you have enough money for this build: s.orbis.zone/65n (all currently sold at wrangell dock; you can omit the military composite at first). then, you will (with enough skill) be basically unstoppable for npcs, which means that you will have a steady source of income from bounty hunting. remember ONLY to start attacking ANYONE after you have fully scanned them and if they're wanted.
contact me if you have additional questions
Just to add my thoughts to 2 very good replies already...
MISSIONS, MISSIONS & more MISSIONS!
Just buying various goods at one starport and transporting them to another for a small profit will earn you almost nothing at all. Transporting the same amount of goods for a specific mission will earn you a fortune by comparison.
Depending on how early you are in the game, if you're still flying a Sidewinder, then I would suggest stick to data delivery missions as they require no cargo space and are very safe - you are very unlikely to be attacked by any NPSs. Doing these will also boost your reputation with the minor factions offering these missions, and they will then reward you with higher paying ones, which will be especially helpful for when you want to move up to trade missions.
Don't bother with trade missions until you can afford to buy a Cobra - trade missions in a Sidewinder are a waste of time. Outfit it as a priority with the best FSD you can get to increase your range for the missions and reduce your travel time through fewer jumps.
In order to help you find the 'Commodities' that you need to complete Trade missions, try using the incredibly helpful site inara.cz - I wish someone had told me about this site early on in my career, as it would have saved me literally hundreds of hours of aimless searching to find the things I needed in the game.
Don't worry too much at an early stage about upgrading your shields and weapons, and instead avoid interdictions at all costs. A thruster upgrade will help to make your ship more maneouverable for avoiding these, but you my need to also upgrade your Power Plant after these other two upgrades.
Finally, the more valuable your cargo, the more likely ships are to try and interdict you, so unless you are very good at avoiding these (and it becomes much easier when your ships get heavier and have a greater 'Mass Lock Factor') then consider this before accepting a very highly paying mission to transport 32T of gold!
Follow these simple steps and you should be up to your first million in no time.
Good luck Commander!
