The Federal Gunship came from the desire for a more supporting role in operations utilising the standard Dropship frame. It's primary role is in fire support and is tougher and also supports higher rated modules making it more versatile.

The Federal Gunship is a ship introduced in the CQC update that has good positions for turrets, good armour and shields and has more Internal Compartments than the Federal Dropship Mk. II. It is more like a fighter escort and its flight model, such as manoeuvrability, speed and acceleration, is not quite as good as the Federal Dropship Mk. II.[1]
