Plasma Slug is an Experimental Effect that can be applied to Plasma Accelerators and Railguns through Engineering. This effect causes ammunition to be generated from the ship's fuel reserves, instead of the weapon having its own ammunition pool, at a rate of 0.022 tons of fuel for every shot in the magazine reloaded, at the cost of 10% reduced damage output per shot. On Railguns, Plasma Slug also reduces the heat generated by 40%.
Plasma Slug weapons should be equipped with caution on a ship with low fuel reserves, as it could become stranded if the pilot is not monitoring the fuel drain. Mounting additional Fuel Tanks will allow Plasma Slug weapons to be used for longer periods without the ship needing to divert to a starport or Fleet Carrier to refuel. Equipping a Fuel Scoop, which enables the ship to refuel freely at fuel stars, also effectively eliminates the restock costs for Plasma Slug weapons.
Premium ammunition generated via Synthesis for Plasma Slug weapons will never reset if the ship is always refuelled via Fuel Scoop. If the ship is refuelled while docked, the ammo quality for Plasma Slug Plasma Accelerators will be reset, while the ammo quality for Plasma Slug Railguns will be retained. If at anytime you jump out of the system in which you synthesized the premium ammo, quality will be reset for both weapon types. This latter behavior is most likely a bug, as it occurs even if you never fire a single shot.
