The ancient name is Alpha Canis Majoris.


Sirius is the brightest star in Earth's night sky. It's a binary star system in the Canis Major constellation, near the Orion constellation. It has a magnitude of −1.46. The system is between 200 and 300 million years old.[2] Originally it was composted of two bright blueish stars.

It's also called the Dog Star in some ancient cultures. The phrase "the dog days of summer" means the hottest days of summer.
