Upaniklis is a system in the frontier of the Core Systems in the Inner Orion Spur. On November 5, 3305, a ship conducting survey for the Interstellar Association for Agriculture picked up a distress signal in Upaniklis that was found to have originated from The Golconda, an ancient generation ship that had been traveling in complete isolation at sublight speeds since it launched from Sol in the 22nd century.[1][2]
A successful initiative to provide emergency supplies to the vessel was followed by a spirited competition between the Empire and the Federation to build the colonists a new, permanent home in the system after it was found that The Golconda could no longer adequately support its growing population.[3] The Federation's proposal proved more popular, resulting the construction of the Outpost Forester's Choice, named for Captain Jonathon Forester of The Golconda's command crew.[4]
